Hi could anyone please explain me the difference between categorical, prelimnary and transitional year residencies. I am going to apply for 2006 match and i wanted to know the difference between them. thanks in advance.

Categorical medicine - three year program to become an internist or follow up with a fellowship to subspecialize. Preliminary medicine - one year of IM training - prior to Derm, Radiology, Anesth, etc. Some other specialties want you to have one year of IM prior to starting their program. Transitional medicine - almost the same thing as preliminary - but might not have as much IM
