Dear bbb,
You seem to know a lot about things... I was wondering if you can help me out.My dad is a 54 and he practiced as an ENT surgeon in India for 20 yrs. Now he's here in the US, and I was wondering what options does he have of working in the healthcare field with all his experience without going into residency.
And if he does pass all the usmle steps, would anybody give him a residency, considering his age.

Just FYI, some states in the US don't require residency to get licensed. You just have to pass all steps, incuding 3. I believe, Texas is like that. I don't know if insurance companies would reimburse you if you haven't done a US residency, but they might.

Hi, I think Florida is one of the states which requires only one year of residency and after that you can work as a doctor…I just heard that too…if I pass the steps I will move from Arizona, which require two years or more…I wish your father all the best, if he doesn’t get in to being a doctor here than I feel we are loosing a good radiologist….take care!

Texas doesn't allow MD license without residency training.
Florida used to allow FMGs to get MD license without residency or taking Step 1 or 2. I even knew one latino-american doctor who got his MD license in Florida this way several years ago, but I am sure it is still possible. One has to be a permanent resident of Florida, he/she has to work as a physician assistant under supervision of an MD licensed in Florida for 1 year. After that the Florida MD has to write an official LOR to the Florida board which would allow this IMG to take Step 3 without taking Step 1/2 or going through residency. May be there are more requirements, I don't remember. After taking Step 3 this IMG would be able to work as a GP in Florida only. He/she wouldn't be able to get into fellowship or become board certified, therefore, competition would be very high. Plus, it is extremely difficult to find a doctor in Florida who would agree to give you such a LOR, he/she has to be a good friend in order to do that.
