yes research helps, but you need to publish in international journals (not Indian ones). Most of us who do that take up a research position here in the US after having finished internship.

university programs like research, but honestly, they won't respect Indian research. In general, they also won't respect any research not published in international journals. I guess you could list your cert in the awards section of your application. I do research here in the US. I am doing a 3 year NIH-funded research fellowship on HIV/AIDS. Yes, it helps for residency application, but with my scores and US LoR/US CE, I got the impression I didn't need it. But I am doing it out of interest, not to get me into a residency. No, you can't apply for US research now. I would apply during your internship.

hello there . thanks for your reply. your reply has really left me in a dicey frame of mind. ok, so 3 more questions :- 1> i am doing research in india as an undergraduate . do you know of any NIH or CDC (or any project by a "commendable" authority ) program in india which i can do as an undergraduate say next year . also how much time commitement is needed for nih or other "accepted" research projects .( i don't want to suffer massively due to research on my acaedmic/college study front.) 2> are WHO/UN projects or those done in field of social medicine of much use say if you want an IM residency. 3> what all things can i do as an undergraduate to increase my chances of getting a good residency in us; besides thorough study ofcourse.please consider this last question to best of your knowledge. bye . waiting for your reply.

I don't know of any undergrad opportunities in India. Besides, you should be focusing on your studies. I guess a WHO project sounds impressive. But again, what they really like to see are US projects in US med schools with US publications. Best thing to do as an undergrad is to try and do clerkship in US and get US LoR. Otherwise, study hard so you can smash your USMLEs
