i made the mistake of taking the courses before i read. It's really good if you read once before you take the lectures(which i highly recommend to anyone who is willing to pay for it).The kaplan people recommend taking the step 1 exam within 3 months of the lectures otherwise you won't remember much.My books were missing for 6 weeks after my lecture(i had to mail them back)and i can attest that more than a few months and you'll forget a lot of material. so you should try to take it within the 3 month period after the lectures end.
good luck

it varies from person to person. How fresh a graduate you are,how many hours you are willing to put it.you personal obligations(family and such),some people take a couple of months others 6-7.

Its taken me 7 weeks. I only have phsyio left which I'll be done with by the beginning of next week. I've been studying straight for 7 weeks about 12 hours a day. I would of finsihed the lecture notes I think in 4 weeks but I read pharm, path, and micro three times since they're suppossedly the bulk of this exam. I read micro 3X cuz I suck at it. Hope this gives you some idea, of what kind of time commitment it takes to read thru all the lecture notes.
