After meals : blood glucose all tissues between meals : liver uses fatty acid for its energy, it stores glycogen but does not use the glycogen for itself, converts this glycogen to glucose and puts it into the blood for brain and rbc. muscle uses its glycogen. fasting : liver uses fat, muscle uses fat and ketone bodies. rbc and brain use glucose from gluconeogenisis. starvation : rbc uses glucose from gluconeogenesis, brain uses ketone bodies but only 75% and glucose 25%, liver uses fat, muscle uses ketone bodies and fat. hope this helps.

after prolonged fasting brain tissue adapts itself for metabolizing ketones for energy purposes......this is necassary to slow down the rate of gluconeogenesis and subsequently a protein sparing effect as there is no stiorage form of protein tht may serve as energy reservoir!
