Just received my score report, I took the CS exam in LA in Dec. '04. Report lists pass/fail on the 3 components ICE/CIS/SEP and Overall Outcome, no numerical score. I'm a US medical grad, so spoken English was not an issue and I'm pretty confident in my clinical and interview skills. That said, the CS exam requires a very specific and precise application of these skills. I used USMLE World and found the cases representations to be spot on. If you complete these cases, you'll have a more than adequate understanding of the breadth & scope of the cases. The cases also help to organize the flow of the encounter and hit all the key history points. I found the timing fine for the most part. The exam videos are short, but really give you the key maneuvers, I used this as my primary guide and was quite comfortable with the physical exam component. I prepared for about 2 weeks. The weak point of USMLE World is in the ortho exam, I used Bates as a reference to fine tune my exam skills and practiced some of the specific maneuvers not referenced in USMLE World. My best advise is relax and be yourself. I approached the encounters as if the patients were actually presenting with that particular problem and found this enabled me to really connect and empathize with them. When all else fails be human, you'll not ask a few important questions and will undoubtedly forget a key exam maneuver but it is overall consistency that counts. Good luck and Best Wishes!

I only used USMLE World, I looked at the Kaplan CS manual but found it to be comparable (and redundant) to USMLE World but without the video demonstrations. You can print portions of the USMLE world cases and general approach if you need to have access to materal away from a computer. If you know this info, you'll be well prepared. I would simply go through the cases a second time or practice on a partner more if necessary. Again, the only limit to USMLE world was the ortho exam maneuvers, you can just read the relevant pages on the specific ortho exams (shoulder, upper extremity, knee, ankle, ect...) in a source like Bates guide to physical exam. Hope this helps, good luck!
