Hi all, allow me to share some anxiety with you... As I've mentioned in another topic, I've finalized my rank list. I am doing electives right now at my number 1 hospital. The PD had told me a couple weeks ago that they would "take care of me." So all this time I have been feeling fairly confident that I will get a spot here. Today, I am in the elevator with the PD, and I asked him if they had finished with their rank list. He told me they sent in the preliminary list, and they are tweaking every week. I then asked him how many pre-match contracts they have given out in all. He told me they gave out NINE prematch spots! Out of 12!!!!! Now I am a lot more anxious about match time, because I was thinking all along that there were 8 spots or so available. Now it's only 3. The PD even told me I "should see the applicant pool. 99s, 97s." I was thinking to myself, "That's fantastic." I got a 76 on step 1, failed step 2 the first time, and got an 83 on the retake. I hope they follow through with their declaration to "take care of me." I have ranked them as my number 1 (out of a total of 6 programs). Geez, I hope I will match there or somewhere, God willing. I feel like suddenly everything is up in the air (a lot more than it was before today). Thanks for listening.

i can see why you would be anxious. unfortunately, PD's and PC's may sometimes make statements that applicants overinterpret. i personally know someone who was promised to be ranked high by two programs, and she ended up not matching anywhere. and if there are only 3 positions available at your top program, your reaction is very valid. at least you have 6 programs to rank, right? i hope you will match at your top choice, and if not, at least match at a program where you'll be happy. good luck..

Thanks for your reassuring words. You are right, perhaps I put in more confidence in the PDs assurances than I should have. I figured since I rotated in peds at that hospital, and the residents and PD and even department head knew me and knew I wanted to go there for peds as number 1 choice, that I could take his words literally. Even before today, I never assumed 100% that it would be true. However, as I said, the fact that only 3 out of 12 spots are available during match, against more competitive (score-wise) applicants, is definitely hard on the nerves. Thanks again, though. Anyone reading this topic, feel free to add your opinions and feelings on mine and/or your own experiences.

I think you should relax and let the computers do their work. You ranked first the hospital you prefer and I would do the same even with only one position left ... there is still a chance.

Just based on what you have said, I would say your chances at matching there as your number one choice are 3 times as good as mine. My top program that I mentioned has only 3 spots (out of 12 total) that are going into the match. I hope all will go well. I did my peds rotation at this hospital, as well as several peds electives. The PD knows me, and I didn't even have a formal interview there. I simply talked to him a couple mins, as well as the head of the department. Sigh... I hope things work out.
