To explain my situation, I am still living in my country (ouside US), in my final year (sixth year) hope to graduate this year.. I am considering a plan to go for USMLE directly after I graduate, and hopefully try to get US residency, but I don't have anyone to ask, and I didn't get exactly what the official sites said.. The reason I am very specific in my question, is because if anything proved to be an obstacle for me (I can't do) might destroy the whole plan, so all the hard work will be useless. I just want to make sure before starting the work, Do I have anything other than this to get a US residency: 1- J1 visa 2- USMLE Step 1 passed 3- USMLE Step 2 (CK + CS) passed The things I wonder if I'll need: 4- my country college graduation certificate 5- USMLE Step 3 passed 6- others And If I want to complete my postgraduate study, do I need something else? Just a short answer will be enough and gratefully appreciated. Like: [For residency you need 1+2+3+4 For postgrad you need 1+2+3+4+6(finishing residency)] Thank you in advance..

Hi, before you start residency you need to be certified by the ecfmg (that means Step 1, 2 Ck and CS. completed. Not Step 3) To be elegible for the application at ecfmg you have to send them an official transcript of your medical school and your graduation certificate. You can look that up at www.ecfmg.org You will get a visa as soon as you have got matched, you cannot get it in advance. Which country are you from? Best is to read the ecfmg information really carefully... good luck anka

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help.. I am from Iraq, that is why it is not that easy for me to study abroad, and that's why I have to make sure that I can provide all what is required to take the risk.. What about postgraduate study? I don't want to do blunders that may eventually make it difficult for me to complete my study.. Since this is my main objective.. Any short advices or recommendations? Thanks again for your help.. :icon_salut:

Unfortunately, I have no idea. However, wish you good luck. By the way, I know a girl from Iraq here who is doing her post-doc and applied for a residency If you are interested to contact her, write me your email adress and I will forward it to her. She might be able to help you better.... good luck anka

Yes, she told me very helpful infos, specially those related specificly to Iraqis.. She is very nice and helpful.. But aren't 84,92 very good scores?? Then what are the minimum scores needed for surgery??!! Will talking in 2 digits be helpless in competition for Surgery?? I mean all at least got 99, and then the race will be in the 3 digits (250,260,270,280!!!)?? By the way did it happen that someone get 300+?!! What is the max. score you heard about?? Thanks anka.. I wish you all the best. I prayed for you, and I will till you get what you want (PED or Family practice)..

Hi Dani, I think you should have around 220 at least (I think my were 206 or 210 and 226) but more important would be an american letter of recommendation...I had none and 2 years of surgery in Germany and 1.5 years of Emergency Medicine in Chile did not help to get an interview in surgery (I anyway did not really want to join surgery again, I just thought I had more chances than in any other residency because of my experience...) good luck anka

Hi anka.. I think that makes Surgery nothing more than a dream for me . By the way, will LORs from my doctors (in my country) help me in getting a residency? Anyway, I heard that the match results will be declared on 16th Mar 2005. I wish you all the best.. Good Luck anka.. Make sure to tell me your result.. Dani..

Hi dani , ankamo I am also from iraq , in the sixth year I was thinking about take USMLE but someone told me it is very hard and the big problem is the visa issue ,he said you may pass all USMLE steps but you mostly can not pass the visa issues. Is there anyone who pass this experience can I ask him . Thank you
