Hi, I didn't do well on my Step I and I got a 196 score. I've reviwed some of the internal medicine programs hoping that there's one that could take me as a resident, but the vast majority of them take people with scores of 200 and above. Also, there are some programs that only take people who graduated within the last 5 years, and I graduated from UAG 10 years ago, almost 11. But that's not it: they also ask for experience in internal medicine in the USA, and obviously, I don't have it. On the other hand, I took a urology residency in Mexico, so obviously, I don't have any internal medicine experience, but the one I had in internship, wich, by the way, is not that much. Obviously, I still need to pass step 2 and CS, and then, start looking for an externship of minimum 2 months, and complete everything if I still want to match next year. Do you know if I still have the chance of getting into an internal medicine program, taking in account my step 1 score and my lack of experience in internal medicine? I appreciate any answers.

Definitely! You didnt mention your step 2 score,so if you havnt written that yet try to get a good score. The 10 year gap after Med school graduation will be a problem for some programs but not all of them but your Urology residency will definitely be a plus in your CV. About Experience in IM, thats not a prerequisite for a lot of programs. Lots of IMG's with your situation are current residents in Internal medicine so keep your hopes high and Good Luck. Cam

GO to Frieda.com and search internal medicine in the region you would like to go, the search results include phone numbers and Emails of program directors. call them and ask if they offer externships. Good Luck
