I am from South America and I graduated from a U.S. liberal arts college. I am now working as a research specialist (so I had a F-1 visa for 4 years and I am now in H1B status-I started this in July of 2004-).

I applied to med school and got in a school in Puerto Rico. Since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the U.S., the school is part of the AMA and technically you are not an IMG.

I am trying to decide whether I should go ahead and go to this school. I have encountered prejudice against Puerto Rican schools. I am scared that this prejudice (combined with the fact that I am not a citizen or permanent resident, which means that residency programs have to go through the hassle of getting me a J visa or the expense of an H1) will be translated in rejection from a residency program.

Do you know anybody in mi situation? What I don't want to do is go to Puerto Rico (thinking this will make my life easier in terms of getting into residency as opposed to me going to med school in my home country and then trying to get into a residency in the U.S.) have a huge debt in dollars and then get rejected and have to go back to my home country.

Please help me make a good and financially sound choice! Thanks!
