Medications that are contraindicated during breastfeeding are:
bromocriptine
cyclosporine
cocaine
cyclophosphamide
doxorubicin
ergotamine
methotrexate
lithium
PCP
phenindione
radioactive iodine
Treatment of breast cancer
Active tuberculosis
Infant galactosemia

NONE of the heptitis infections are absolute contraindications
breast augmentation and reduction are NOT contraindications
PPD+ is NOT a contraindication

These are some of them, I hope it's enough for the first time smiling face

breast abcess is not a CI besides antibiotics the mother should continue breast feeding from both breasts if she does not feed from the affected breast it will engorge and delay healing process.

well it was very tricky for me too. in PEDS (Current) it says continiu Breast feeding and in GYN (MOORE) it says switch to the other one. anyone has a more plaussible explanation for either of themrolling eyes

You can also use ice packs to help with engorgement.

Also, HIV is a contraindication unless the mother is in a 3rd world country or rural area where that would be the only source of food for the infant.

  #9

perhaps mother taking alcohol is also a C/I.

  #10

galectosemia is an absoloute contraindication to breast feeding as well as t.b., syphillis and hiv.

  #11

I asked about mother taking alcohol. are u sure syphlis is a contraindication?

  #12

one more question, does breast feeding cause disfigurement of breast and some ladies don't want to breast feed because of this reason.

  #13

i read it in nms that breasy abscess is not a reason to stop B.F. instead the patient shld be encouraged to feed from the affected breast so as to prevent engorgement. this is something opposite that i believed in cause i thought if a pt. has breast abcess one feeds from the opposite breast!!!!!

any bright ideasconfused

treatment for breast abscess: drain abscess, give Abx, and continue breastfeeding.

Active herpes infection on the breast, however is a C/I to breastfeeding.

HIV is not a C/I to breast feeding, the mother can be given the choice, and the benefits and disadvantages
