friends can u plz tell me the indications for following .( i'm hopeless with fluids and elec.) 1/2 NS 1/3 NS 1/4 NS thanks in advance. Lucky, it's all about physiology here . dehydration and overhydration - loses/gains too much water/salt Gross principles below: dehydration: if water loss>salt loss - increased Na - don't give too much salt / Na (restrict salt/Na intake) if water loss=salt loss - normal Na - give both salt and water if salt loss>water loss - decreased Na - give salt/Na or restrict water intake overhydration: if water gain>salt gain - decreased Na - give salt/Na & restrict water intake if water gain=salt gain - normal Na - restrict water/salt intake if salt gain>water gain - increased Na - give a diuretic & restrict salt intake Hope I'm right  .

1/2 has the most salt and 1/4 has least salt, so if you know that then give it to a patient according what they have lost. Pretty striaghtforward.

I encountered the same problem... but I discovered that 1/2 NS is "half normal saline" ( NS is 0.9% Na - so 1/2 NS is 0.45%Na) Also there si D5W (dextrose 5% in water) Hope it helps... All the best!
