For those of you who took CS in philadelphia, just want to tell you that mine was in the mail today. So don't worry about getting results for the match..you should receive them on time.

My experience, in case anyone is interested.

-wrote PAM HR FOSS on the blank paper given for notetaking
-knocked on door and opened a little, asked "May I come in?"
-Hi i'm DR. XXXX, i'm one of the doctors here. I understand you're having some XXXX pain..why don't you tell me about it and if there's anything else I need to know, i'll ask you ok?
-took drape from chair..
-I'm just going to drape this on your lap ok?
-sat on stool, clipboard on lap
-Ok, tell me about your pain..and I'll just take some notes so I don't miss anything important, ok?
-good eye contact, with "uh, huh, go on" and head nod once in awhile
-Ok, now I'm going to ask more detailed questions..
-go over your PAM HR FOSS and make sure everything is complete..
-Ok, i think i have all the information i need, now i'll just do a focused exam..let me wash my hands first..
-While washing hands..."so are you ready for the holidays? I'm sure not ready"
perform a focused exam..assist patient in reclining or getting off the exam table..be gentle..let them know what you're doing at all times..
when finished with PE, let them know your #1 diagnosis and some tests..
"ok, i've asked you some questions and examined you..right now i'm really considering XXX but I'd like to do some tests (enumerate some tests) before i can tell you definitely ok?" So do you have any questions?"
ok, i'll see you next time to discuss the results.. handshake..depart.

more tips...
i don't know what advice to give about the time factor..i didn't even get a chance to look at my watch, but i usually left the room with one or two minutes to go..
dress nicely and iron your labcoat..i noticed that american grads dressed casually and had wrinkled coats. if you were a patient, wouldn't you like to see a nicely dressed and neat doctor?
as much as you try to relax, it will be difficult..but once you get through your first encounter, the rest will be a breeze..RELAX!
this test is mainly to see how you communicate with patients..Kaplan CS has examples of the kinds of questions to expect like "am i going to die?" or "is this something i have to live with for the rest of my life?" be prepared to answer these types of questions..i had some cases when i had no idea what to put as differential..i had some that only had 2 differentials and 3 diagnostics..
GOOD LUCK everybody..

congrats, glad to hear about passing results - always nice...

one comment about dressing nice. yes, dress nice, but you don't have to worry about being in a pressed suit! :P I went in regular slacks, a button-up shirt, and my white coat. No tie or anything. I think as long as you look decent, you should be fine. Pants, button-up shirt (tucked in of course), and a clean white coat as usp has said.

the rest of usp's post is good advice. grin

uspinoydoc Congrats for passing the exam plus thanks for a very good post, which will help a lot.

Did you write or type? if type, would it be problem if i do some typing mistakes due to speedy typing??

Thanks again

Sar.

I wrote because I'd have a better idea how much space i was taking up.. I printed of course, and although I usually have very neat handwriting, that went out the window! what a mess!

By the way, my reference was Kaplan CS.. and I found a website in this forum that has PE videos for free..

Thanks for your reply! You have written that you put a drape on SPs lap before starting History, is it correct? or should we put it after history and before PE. If he will be sitting, with legs hanging, should i still put the drape on his legs???

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i think i am going crazy??? smiling face sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo confused! Sorry about that!

Good luck to you for your residency!

I placed the drape before I took history. The drape will be on the stool where you will sit, so you have to remove it before you sit.. I just unfolded once then placed on their lap.

Thanks again! smiling face

by the way, you don't need to bring food..they had sandwiches and fruit.. you will have a safe place to store your valuables..no favorite pens allowed, you must use theirs.

In Chicago they served salad , fruit and " build your own sandwich " - that means you can choose what kind of bread you want and what you want to put on it . I don't remember if they had any seafood . I did not feel hungry and just had some salad , fruit and cookies . Beverages were following : coffee , tea , hot chocolate , soda pops and bottled water .

Oh thanks Dacis grin , that would be fine for me.

I dont want to eat a lot, just a little bit to avoid loud hunger pangs! smiling face and tea or coffee to avoid somnolence, as i am addicted to it.

Thank you very much!

I couldn't eat either..I just ate fruit and had water. I didn't want my stomach to give me problems. Not exactly a good combination being nervous and a full stomach! grin
