I gave the exam in Houston last week, and it was much different than I expected.....the first patient I really screwed up and asked so many questions I ran out of time in the middle of the physical exam, and of the 11 of the rest, I forgot to ask for smoke and drinking of three of them, and I feel I failed horribly, but at the same time, I felt that I did well for the remainder of the patients, and I can understand the communication part that lots of people failed in, anyway I sold my step 1 books on ebay, but Im keping these books to see, I hope I passed because I cant afford another exam, and I ahd to travel, it would be a back breaker for me to have to do it again, so please pray for me, and the most important thing I noticed as a practicing physician out of the country is that we must manage our time, and adress thre patients needs most importantly. I tried to smile, and crack some jokes every now and then, tried to make them feel safe, and tried to tell them to tell me anyhting they needed to. Basically we are caregivers to these people, and we must make them feel very good, to the point that a patient even hinted out the questions that I did not ask and that changed my clinical reasoning considerably, so be kind!!! And I hope they oversee my first encounter.....also I think I overdressed, as the americans I saw were wearing usual clothes, nothing special....so I think I overdid it! Anyway, I wish all luck, and ask for your kind prayers.

I too had to leave the room in the middle of the physical exam (a neurologic case) and forgot to ask about smoking 1 or 2 patients and passed the exam. Hope you'll pass too!

Don't worry about it..I screwed up my first patient too..While standing and waiting for the signal, I kept saying to myself "Please don't let it be a XXX case.." Sure enough, that's exactly what it was! My most dreaded case..I didn't finish my closing..but after that it went smoothly..

Thanks for the replys, the intresting thing is that too it was a neurological case! And thats why the physical exam took so long, and then a mental assesment and she had trouble with her patrner......so Im Im not alonein the boat...

Hi....how did you prepare for the exam? How long did your preparation take?

  #10

I prepped for about 2 weeks for the exam, not much but enough. I used the Kaplan book, and also downloaded the noted from this website, but most important I think was recording my own voice and reviewing it, using my family as patients, and staying calm!

I WANMTED TO ASK THAT IF I HAD TO MATCH FOR 2006 WHEN TO TAKE STEP2 CK AND CS?
PLEASE PLEASE DO REPLY
I WOULD B THANKFUL TO U

  #12

Hello, to participate in the match, you must have only passed step 1. But by January, you must have your ecfmg certificate, which requires step 1, 2 ck and 2cs and also verification by your medical school. SO I would say take the steps by fall, at most by september to be in the match!
