I am an IMG, and have passed my USMLE step 1 and preparing for Step 2. As every one preparing for USMLE knows that it takes lots of time and energy to get good scores. My score in step 1 is 94 and I am hoping to get good score in step 2 as well. But there are times when I think what would happen if I dont get match in ANY program. Are there any other jobs where my ECFMG certification would have any added value.
Note: I am US resident and dont require any visa to work.

Hello San Jose:

Well i've been feeling the same, but we need to be strong, i applied for the match 2005 and only have 2 interviews (which is better than nothing) my score in step 1 wasn't as good as yours  but in step 2 i got 94 and now i'm waiting for results in step 2. In the mean time i found a job as a MA medical assistant in a internal medicine office. The doctor is really nice and let me see the pts like a doc (and then we talk about the diagnoses) of course all under her supervision. I don't know if the ECFMG certificate has any value to get a job in the medical field but keep trying and don't lose hope.

Wish you all the best.

If you are interested in become a registred MA you can call to the ARMA (american registry of medical assistants) the tel is 413 562 7336 (by the way that help me to get the job in the office i told you.

Good luck.

Hi RoC

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my posting. I wish you the best of luck in your 2005 match. I will be applying for 2006 match. After my Step 2 , I will search for any observership/externship, it may help me in getting interviews.
Did you ever research on PA (Physician Assistant). When I did some research on PA through internet, I came to know that
-it requires education/training from an accredited program. I dont know how long the studies is. I dont have time to go for formal training in a university. Medical school was enough...
- it also requires to pass an exam.. (which I think we should be able to do)

It would be great if they coule waive the education/training portion of requirement for ECFMG certified people... just a thought...

San Jose:

Well, i did some research on the PA and came out to the same conclusions you did. You have to go to the PA college (takes 4 years to be a graduate). As i told you, even though the payment is not as good working as a MA it will give you some clinical exp in the US and can get you some good LOR. The doctor i'm working with got me my second interview, she called the PD and they give me the chance to interview, so i think to work even as a Medical Assistant is not that bad.

Best of the luck to you too.
