Hi! I was wondering if there are any other Aussies as crazy as me trying to work their way through this USMLE nightmare. I am half way through my OB/GYN training is Aus. I would love to meet up with other Australian doctors to help each other through. BlueZephyr

Hi Kevin, Congrats on Step 1! My guess is that you have graduated more recently than me as Step 2 seems the easier place to start once you have been in clinical work for awhile. I graduated from Monash Uni (in Melbourne) in '95 and am now living in Chicago. How long did it take you to prepare for Step 1? Was it hard? Any tips? Thanks for your reply. Why are you doing the USMLE? Would love to hear your story. Nicole

Graduated in 2001 - PGY2 Step 1 was hard - I had those pretest questions and tried to study from textbooks including just summary ones but found it too cumbersome while working... i used first aid for step one. the exam was hard and i felt the books didnt prepare me for the exam which is very different to OZ ones (I studied at UWA). they didnt ask the really core stuff and had these 2 or three step questions as you will read about. but very surprisingly i passed... 217/88 i did step one first because i knew it was harder. i have friends who only studied for step 1 but sat both and did really well in step 2... my wife is from NY and wants to go back, hence the USMLE... but we are aiming for LA (couldnt live in NY after Perth!!!!!!!!!) have you been working in the US???? I will get there in june/july and will miss the residencies as i would still need to do CSA or Step 2CS... Kevin

hi kevin, how does the scoring system work? roughly what percentage of questions do you need to get right to pass? Good luck with step 2! Nicole

"BlueZephyr" wrote: hi kevin, how does the scoring system work? roughly what percentage of questions do you need to get right to pass? Good luck with step 2! Nicole There are 350 questions is 7hrs plus 1hr break but 50 are experimental questions and arent marked although you do not know which ones they are. pass mark which i am sure is scaled is 182... average around my time was 215. they also mark it on a scale 0 - 100, 75 is passing mark but this is not percentiles. so the answer is i am unsure there are different blocks with different difficulties and different people get different blocks. i really thought i failed. i definitely knew 25% the rest i was unsure.. are you working there??

Not working yet just preparing. I can't work in clinical med until I get the lousy exams and I can't work otherwise until I get the appropriate visa. So a bit of messing around to do before getting back to the grindstone. Thanks for the scoring info. N

Hi, I am medical student from western australia (currently doing 3rd year). Do any of you know whether doing the exam at the end of 3rd year may be better than doing it once you graduate? Also what is the reccommended preparation? Is the exam very different to what we are taught? thanks
