Hello, i´m an IMG currently a resident in medical oncology in Spain, i have done two years of internal medicine and now i´m in my first year, out of two, of oncology. I´m planning to go to the States by the time i finish my residency here next year, still do not know if i will go straight to do a fellowship in oncology or if i will start a residency in internal medicine and after that try a fellowship in oncology. I took step 1 and 2 in november,I took three weeks of holidays from my hospital and did both them in the same week, i got 90/92 i know they are nice scores but probably not enough if i try a top IM program, do you think program directors will take into account that i´m already a resident in Spain, did both exams together and so on, i mean i´m reading now about how important is to have a great score when you are an IMG, i think that maybe fair, but it is also true that your score is not everything, since it´s kind of dose-dependent effect, the longer you study, the better score you get. I do not have a visa, and how can i apply for it without having a job offer? Which IM programs could i apply for? Thank you BBB

We hire people every year with those scores (and I consider this hospital to be one of the strongest in the USA) - you did great. Yes, program directors will take into account that you are from Spain (or Peru or Lebanon or Nepal or Ghana like we do every year with applicants). We know that the score isn't everything - all it basically does is show that you can read and retain the material.

Hi BBB! Thanks a lot for your advice, i really appreciate the time you take to answer our questions, as i told you i still have not made up my mind about going to the States to take only a fellowship in oncology or doing again IM and after that a fellowship in oncology, where could i learn about IM programs and which programs do you think i would have a chance if i apply for them, any IM high level in Boston? i do not have any visa, i know it is an advantage to have a visa but i have heard that i can not i get a visa in advance without having a job there, is that true?

Do search on-line for information about the residency programs - check with FRIEDA through the AAMC web pages. There is a wealth of information on the internet - start searching!! I can't help you with city specific information - I'm hiding behind my cloak of invisibility!!
