I am interested in doing unpaid research in the US. I know I need a J1 research visa in order to do that but I have heard that if I get it I will have to spend 2 years in my home country before I can apply for a visa that will allow me to enter residency. Is that true? Can people get a research visa and then convert it without problems to a J1 residency visa?

OK, not my area of expertise, but in general, try not to enter the US on a J1 visa. You will have to return to your home country for 2 years before you can re-enter the US on any kind of permanet visa. If, however, you do not harbor any desire to live permenantly in the US, then I think you can do sequential J-1 visas. I know people who have done a J-1 followed by F-1 without having to worry about the 2 year requirement. Whenver you want to convert to anything more than your 1 year practical training, the J-1 rules apply. There are ways to get waivers for J-1s, and they are much less strict about this rule if the J-1 was not for residency education. Good luck!
