Hi all, I faild my 1st attempt with USMLE Step 1 and it made me very sad. I think I didn t have enough time to prepare but instead of studying some more I decided to go and the result was poor. I read some posts here on the forum and I know I am not alone but still pretty depressed. Right now I am trying to come up with a plan but I have some questions with which I need your help. First of all what is the difference between Qbank and NBME ,I didn t have neither of them for the first exam. Also I am interested if any of you know anything about the preparation courses , how much they cost, where I can finde some information and are they worth to attend. Also, I did very poor on physiology and histology. I don t have any books to study physiology from and no books with pix for histology. I know I had problems with pix during the exam as I was pretty week in Histology during the 1st year of med school.Do you have any suggestions?? Maybe Robins?? What I have at home is First Aid, and Kaplan books -Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Immunology, Pharmacology and Behavioral Science. I also have Step-Up(HY notes). I bought Golian audio Pathology and listened to it. What do you think I should use? Should I look for these courses or try again just by myself? I live in the Chicago subarbs and I would love to have a study partner. Maybe someone lives near me? I will be very grateful for any help!

hi formosa its sad to hear about ur result but i m sure u r going to make it next time. i have given my step-1. i feel kaplan is sufficient, provided u read it repeatedly many times. goljan lectures and notes tooooooo good NBME are exams like usmle which u can get online for $50, i think so it is said that they are very close to usmle and is used for prep assessment with kaplan notes u get Q bank and also online once u r thorough with ur books u can solve online Q bank. first aid helps too moreover this time whatever u read , revise more often so that it sinks. for physio i think kaplan is good and for histo n all i did webpath repeatedly. robbins too much, i chose goljan instead hope it helps good luck

Hi gini, Thanks for the help. I think I will do some more research on the NBME and I already found the Kaplan Qbank. I just don t know how to find the Goljan webpath for histology though. I think I will buy Robbins on e-bay.

I am just a bit confused about all Goljan materials , you know. The first time I tried just before the exam I bought this CD on e-bay with Dr. Goljan lectures from pathology. I listened to them. I didn t find anything else on e-bay though. Do you think I can get histology and physiology by Dr. Goljan. I am sorry if these are silly questions , I just don t know. Thank you for all your advise so far

MY FIRST TIME I FAILED ALSO AND THE SECOND I DID VERY WELL LOOK NO MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE TO GET Q BANK I DID IT TWICE IT IS THE BEST AND THE 2004 FIRST AID IS AWESOME IF YOU HAVE KAPLAN THEIR PHYSIOLOGY SECTION IS GREAT BUT YOU HAVE TO READ IT OVER AND OVER TILL YOUR SICK OF IT HISTOLOGY I WOULNT EVEN WORRY FOR A SECOND YOU MIGHT GET THREE QUESTIONS ON YOUR NEXT EXAM

Hey, I read your post. First of all. DONT PANIC! Stay calm and be happy that you are almost at the end fo the race in STEP 1! YOu are almost there!! Just a couple subjects etc, and you will be fine. Listen, here is what I think you should do. Since you need a book for Physio, try the BRS! IT is short and concise and what is left you can do from First Aid. WHen you do questions on Qbank, the answers will help you understand the remaining concepts. For Patho, you can buy BRS too! This is a book people do too! BRS and GOLIAN lectures! Thats a power packed knowledge. Do questions too and you are set. Whereever you are getting the questions wrong, go and reread in your notes and then you will never forget it. As for histo, I didnt know you need to worry about them? you have 350 questions and out of them , you will have a couple. So who cares if you miss them? Think about it. Spend time on Physio which is more importand along with Patho!!! Those are the MAJOR stuff. Don't waste too much time thinking that you will need for ever to restart! Just focus on your weaknesses first and then revise what you already know! Finally Read all the posts form past experiance! Those help. Oh yah, you konw Golijan is good book but it is LONG and HARD. NOt as easy as BRS and Kaplan Patho. Sinc eyou are given the exam, you want to to fix some concepts so just do the easy books, and when you do questions you will see Golijan audios, and the BRS OR KAPLAN are sufficiant. Anyways, I hope I helped. OH YAH, REPETITIVE REVISION IS ALSO KEY! SO keep the books limited and revisions MAIN PRIORITY! Cheers! (If I am wrong in anything, Others can correct me. I dont mind. Just trying to help! :icon_salut: :icon_salut: )

Thank you for help. Yes you did help me a lot as I just realized that I haven t revised too much last time. I had a hectic schedule for studying , did milion things in the mean time and moved from another country which really did effect my concentration. It all distracted me enough so I just had time for cramming. I think I will limit my books first. I have FA and Kaplan lectures. I also have Goljan patho CD. When I said histology I meant the slides. I didn t express myself right. I have always had problems with them. Do you know where can I find some? My FA has some in the end but there are just few. Again , thank you for help!! I will do my best not to panic
