A 5-year-old girl is brought by her parents to the emergency room because she is complaining of stomach pain.
Physical examination reveals multiple bruises on the child's body in different stages of healing. X-ray examination
of the chest demonstrates two cracked ribs, and the child says, "Mommy hit me." The parents deny any abuse of
their children. The physician's most appropriate response would be:

A. "I am going to call the police right now."

B. "I must report this situation to Child Protective Services right now."

C. "I need to hospitalize this child for further studies."

D. "I will bind her ribs tonight and you must promise me that you will not strike this child again."

E. "I will bind her ribs tonight and you need to bring her to the outpatient clinic in the morning."

Definitely answer-C (hospitalize)! :idea:
The first 2 answers are like medical jokes.

B

In this case, maybe a child abuse :arrow: report to child protective service

Here is an example of what happens in the book and what actually happens clinically is 2 different things.

Go in to a high crime area and tell a parent your reporting them to Child Protective services.{See how much of a wave you create}

Clinically, I like the inconspicuous method of admitting the child!
For usmle that may be correct but its not very realistic!

dr mjl u r right. it is a case of child abuse but first duty is to protect the child and ensure his safety. reporting to child protective agency is mandatory but for that a physician need not inform the parent about it.
