Cant say they prolong life but they decrease mortality because of their negative chronotropic and negative ionotropic affect and in simple words decrease the work of the heart!

what you said is true. also beta blockers can cause a reduction in the secretion of renin from the kidney , so leading to a less salt and water retention-----> less preload.
