Considering that each ERAS application to a program costs $25 and that many of us IMG's are not working here and are on a tight budget,it would be very helpful if we can in some manner find out and not waste money by applying to programs who do'nt entertain IMGs.
I am an IMG who has given step 1 and wud be appearing for step 2 somewhere in may-june.
it doesn't cost $25 per program..thank GOD!! it costs $60 for the first 10 programs per specialty, then $8/program for the next 10 within the same specialty, $15/program after that..plus a one time $50 usmle transcript fee..but yes, it CAN get expensive..that's why i only applied to 18 IM programs..total $174..but before that, you have to pay $75 token fee from ECFMG..participate in the match? add another $90..
it is okay to email a program with those questions..some people may want to add the following questions:
1. what is the minimum step 1/2 score required?
2. what percentage of your residents are IMG's?
generally speaking, community hospitals are IMG friendly..in fact most, if not all, of their residents are IMG's..if you're one of those 99/99 people wanting to get into a university program, make sure you contact them with your questions..by the way, FREIDA has some information such as sponsoring visas.

Of course it's all right to email programs and ask them the criteria. If I had a nickel for every email I received, I could take a year off work and play!!!
Now, if you are looking at emailing programs for next year - please hold off until mid-to-late July to do this!!!
