Dr. Billy - DO NOT GIVE UP! EVER! Look, you were so close to passing - the majority of people with your score who retake the exam pass on their next attempt. Please don't let this experience bring you down forever. I failed three times - talk about depression. I know how it feels to see that awful word "FAIL" on my score report. However, I'm not giving up. I plan to retake the exam next Wednesday - Jan, 19th. I've studied for over 6 months - starting at the end of June last year. As an AMG, I am especially embarassed and ashamed of myself. How many US medical graduates have this problem? I lost my residency in last year's match because of my failure last January. I got a 70/169. Not a score to be proud of but I am still alive. If you need a boost - please read my first entry of Pinkangel's daily diary. Perhaps my experience will give you some comfort. You are not alone. My advice to you: I understand about time constraints and wanting to participate in the next match - HOWEVER - give yourself enough time to strengthen your weak areas before you take the exam again. This was my big mistake - always setting a date before I was ready because I had deadlines to meet, pressure from my medical school dean, pressure to meet the rank order list deadline from last year's match. That gave me unnecessary failures on my record which I cannot erase. Please do not take the exam until you are fully prepared. The best measure of your preparation is your comfort level, Q bank scores, but most importantly how you do on the NBME self assessment tests. There is a thread in the exam experiences section that gives a good correlation of your score on NBME with your actual score on the USMLE. You want to get at least a 400 to pass. Other members of this forum will be able to give you some good advice as to what other actions to take as an IMG. This is just my heartfelt advice to you from a person who has had repeated failures due to lack of preparation and taking the exam before I knew my stuff. Best wishes, pinkangel

my friend. i was at Easrtern virginia medical school library for prep of step 1 for the last 6 months. there i became freinds with a guy who failed becoz his dad passed away one day before his exam. the next time he took it he failed at 180. The third time i helped him and he scored 200. like we studied togther. so i guess i understand how bad it gets for AMGs if they flunk. For IMGs its a big scorethat matters and not just passing. so this is like a wake up call for me. Like where i stand rite now and where i want to be are waYyyyyy far apart. Anyway i was forceed into the exam by my family and i knew i was not ready. My only concern is that i was pushing the exam date every time i got tense. and after i pushed it i relaxed and my pace of studyin fell down. I think if you know you have two or three months you get slow. If you plan back from the date of your exam you work towards a deadline YOUR pace is set.. i think a good two months after first read is enough. i had other distractions in life.. which i have eliminated. BUt i dont wana fail again. that wod be fatal for me. say a pray for me when you say one for your self. many thanks Buddy.

Focus on your weak areas and attack those first and last(along with rote memory subjects)

but i cant figure out my reault MJL. i got a wide range meaing many "X" around the borderline for every subject. menas i did bad in evcery subject. and if a subject has an Astrix it means that my performance was so ambigious on that subject that they cant tell me the extent fo the variance. I am confused.it borderline in all subjects..no particular weak area. patho and physio are like above borderline...rest are all at borderline. CONFUSED.
