In the first trimester, HCG is produced by placenta which maintains corpus luteum. Corpus luteum keeps producing estrogen and progesterone. High levels of estrog. and prog. keep the levels of LH and FSH low as ovulation is not required at this time. In the later part of pregnancy when the placenta is fully developed and fetal adrenal gland start contributing, the levels of estrogen and progesterone further increase. Placenta also produce gradually increasing levels of hPL. As estrogen is one of the stimulating factors for prolactin secretion by the ant pit. so prolactine level also gradually increase with increasing level of estrogen but its ction on the breast is inhibited by estrogen and progeterone and thats why lactation does not occur during pregnancy.
