IMG , grad 2005, GC holder 99/99/ certified USCE: 3 months observership 3 US LORs applied in september to 35 IM programs, received 12 invitations, went to 8 ( st louis university, baylor college of medicine, creighton univ, henry ford, cleveland clinic florida, plus 3 community progr) no straightforward prematches offered matched at Saint Louis Univ, my no 1 choice what I learned through this experience: scores do matter, they are the first filter. but interviews are so important, this is an aspect we tend to forget, being so focused on studying and getting great scores. present yourself to the best, show confidence, and MODESTY. smile and be courteous even if you didn't get a wink of sleep the night before and you're tired of the same old tell me about you question. and learn from each interview you take. I started with the ones I didn't really really want. you will be amazed how much you improve by the end. research.... I didn't have any experience with that, I guess it is important for A league programs, but I got a few good calls even without it. I think the best thing you can do to improve the application is USCE and good US lors. thats what helped me stand out of the hundreds of double 99ers I think. Good luck to all the future applicants and THANK YOU admin for this great forum!!! It has been my second (well...third) home since I started this journey and I learned a lot from it. Alina

Carmencita wrote: Why couldn't you get a US LOR if you did an observership? Where did you do it? well id rather not disclose the program name but i will say that it was'nt because of any fault on the program's part or unhelpfulness by the attendings. what happened was that I managed to get only a month there which got split into 15 days on gmu floors and 15 days in onco...coupled with that were 2 long weekends where the attendings were off.... in the end i spent only abt 10 days with the attending personally...not nearly enough to impress them enuf for a LOR...the lady was kind enuf to write me one...but it was a very weak LOR with nothing specific at all...and no mention abt any hands on xp which is what programs look for...so in the end i preferred to substitute it with a much stronger LOR from my home country!
