prelim is a one year position meant for people going into a specialty that requires one year of something else first (anaesthesia, radiology, etc.). It counts toward your residency training (versus transitional which does not) in terms of board-exam eligibility, but the program is under no obligation to grant you the next two years of training. Categorical is the three year spot where the program is obligated to give you three years of training. In gernal, if you just want to do medicine or pedi or surg, categorical is the way to go.

but for us who has not much clinical experience either back in my home country or in the US, is preliminary easier to get into? Should I apply for both just to be safe?
