Hey Group, I failed the USMLE Step one the first time and I've decided to take a new approach to studying for the test. I am listening to all of Goljan's Pathology audio lectures (8hrs x 5days worth) and taking extensive notes on what he says. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS SUFFICIENT REVIEW OF PATHOLOGY FOR THE USMLE Step 1?? (considering that Pathology is like 60% of the test)? I plan to just review the extensive notes that I have taken while listening to the lectures. I only have the 100pp of Goljan High Yield Notes. I do not have the full lecture notes that accompany these lectures. P.S. I am also reading the 100pp Goljan High Yield Notes, are these worth my time to really learn well? Thank you VERY much for helping me out in my time of need, Tillya

I would say YES the Goljan audio is worth every minutes!! But I'm not so sure about the 100 pages... I think they are good as a rapid review but do not expect anything more than that from them.... But this is just my opinion, others might disagree... I hope this hepls.

I think the 100 page is good for review. I would use the notes that go with the Goljan lecture. I believe there are two notes: general and systemic pathology and both are around 300 pages long (skim through at least 2x with the audio) . I also recommended doing the questions throughout the notes and his mini exam. ~Meddancer

The lectures are good....just make sure thats you read Pathology too.Kaplan/BRS or somewhere else you're comfortable with. The high yield notes weren't too helpful for me......you may want to keep that for last when you have some time to spare near the exam day.

Hi I was reading the posts concerning only using the Goljan notes. I, too after failing the first time concentrated on Goljan's material & the qbank. I took the test a second time only to fail it again with the same score (w/in 1 point) as the first time. I now wish that I had not spent as much time on his material as I did. Don't get me wrong - his material is golden, but I think the writers of step 1 are on to him & his jewels. for my 3rd try, I will spend some time w/his material, but it will be short. George

Im so very sorry about ur bad experience with this exam. I will keep fingers crossed for you. I had a similar situation as urs as well when i took my entrance exam to Medical School, the board was after my anatomy teacher, and every trick he tought us, the way he made us analyze a question... it was backwards at the real exam. I found out later on my first year of university that it was a way to diminish his importance and his success, but for that students were the ones paying the price. Its sad... Back to our times, how do u feel about the questions on the exam?... Can u recognize them through Kaplan books? .. Any input about step 1 would be very appreciated. Thanks Wish u as many productive days as possible Ana

Thanks for your sympathy. I now view the whole thing as a learning experience, however at first I thought it was a bad experience. I have come to realize that whatever I was doing & using to study wasn't producing the desired results. So, I finally concluded that the plan must be altered. For me, a lot of my problems stem from the fact that I had my basic sciences in 1990-1991. I have forgotten almost all of it. I have a lot of problem with Kaplan's material & just can't read it & make sense out of it. I think that I need to get back to the basic material & start from the beginning by understanding the concepts which I have forgotten. On qbank, I was getting in the high 60's & low 70's on the questions, but when it came to the real thing not so good. The questions were straight forward, but I had a lot of them that I thought what are they talking about. I believe this shows a lack of basic understanding on my part. So, it's down into the trenches to slough it out with some topics that I really despise (biochem, genetics). I have 1 other suggestion. don't take the exam if you are sick. I got sickwith bronchitis 5 days before the scheduled test date & didn't want to pay them their $100 to cancel. Now the getting sick was rotten timing on my part. I think that contributed to me not being able to concentrate. I remember that there was a resistance question & I couldn't remember how to calculate it. Just totally blank. Best to you!!!! George
