WELL HERE IT IS my exam experience.
FIRST OF ALL KUDOS TO THIS FORUM AND FRIENDS WHO HELPED ME ON THIS FORUM TO QUELL MY ANXIETY AND HELPED ME THRU OUT MY PREPRATIONS.

I am an IMG and had almost decided to post my exam experience after my results, but thought that this might help those who are about to take their step-1 meanwhile so here i am narating my exam experience.
First of all,
ALL YOU NEED TO ACE THIS EXAM IS TO BE THOROUGH WITH KAPLAN NOTES I FULLY AGREE WITH RETROVIRIDAE HERE.
If you know more ofcourse it is an advantage, but if u can ace the exam by knowing kaplan materials i think one should go for it.
I read for 2.5 months but serious study was done during last 1 month, i had studies various basic sciences text books, like GANONG, ROBBINS HARPER ETC during my prepration to other entrance exams previously, but found that for step-1 content that is tested on exams none of these are necessary, though going thru robins pics might help.
I had no problems with time as i could finish most blocks about 10 mins early and finished exam itself about 1 hour earlier and could take ample number of breaks in between, i think for me atleast time was never a problem.
I found doing kaplan online q-bank was most helpfull.
know your pathology very well i strongly recommend goljan rapid review textbook along with his audio.everything you need to know for exam is there.
all that was there was some ct scans and groos specimens which were easy to identify.
Not much of biochem may be around -10 questions some of them pretty complicated but i just guessed them.
Microbio was simple with some straightforward questions.
They give classic clues so dont get flummoxed by thinking about some strage phenomenon or thinking that there is some trick in the questions 9 ofcourse some tricky questions are there but not many)
About 5-7% of questions were unanswerable i have not come across these questions anywhere i guess they probably experimental.
Moleculor biology questions again were simple and straight forward,if u have read it, and again kaplan is more than enough for this subject too.
Genetics, was in the form of clinical vignettes.
I think it is very important to read some clinical vignettes, thankfully i am working fulltime in medicine and found it very advantageous for me to do step-1, because otherwise i would have been taken back by the amount of clinical vignettes which only needed clinical knowledge to answer these questions.
I was at some point wondering whether this was step-1 or step-2 paper.
Well guys ONE BOTTOMLINE I READ MANY BOOKS BUT I FOUND KAPLAN BOOKS VERY HELPFULL AND ORIENTED TO EXAMS.
OTHER BOOKS I USED WERE
BRS PATHO - AN AVERAGE BOOK, ( I FOUND GOLJAN REVIEW MOST HELPFULL)
I PLACED MY EMPHASIS OF PATHOLOGY WHICH HOPEFULLY WILL WORK OUT FOR ME.
BRS PHYSIOLOGY( OH HERE I DIDNOT USE KAPLAN BECAUSE I DIDNOT HAVE IT I THINK BRS PHYSIO IS A VERY GOOD BOOK IT U HAVE SOME BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSIOLOGY BECAUSE IT ASSUMES U ALREADY HAVE GOOD GROUND KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSIO BEFORE U START READING IT)
ANATOMY JUST WENT THRU KAPLAN 9 MORE THAN ENOUGH)
GENETICS BIOCHEM MOL BIO - KAPLAN
MICRO - JAWETZ REVIEW AND KAPLAN
PHARMAC - KAPLAN AND KATZUNG - I DID THESE ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS AND ANTIBIOTICS IN THESE
BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES AND BIO STSTS - KAPLAN
Guys I Did not do much of anatomy and behavsciences and i was lucky that i got very less questions on them ( I TOOK CHANCES)and ones i got were very easy but I SUGGEST U TAKE BEHAV SCIENCES SERIOUSLY SINCE ACCORDING TO MANY IT IS HEAVILY TESTED IN MOST STEP-1 EXAMS.
I HAVE TRIED MY BEST TO PUT FORWARD MY EXPERIENCE THIS WAY HOPE SOMEONE WILL FIND IT USEFULL
