A healthy 24-year-old woman decides to take a skiing vacation in the Swiss Alps. She takes a ski lift to the top of the mountain , where the barometric pressure is 347 mmHg. When she arrives at the top of the mountain, her alveolar PCO2 is 30mmHg. If she now voluntarily doubles her alveolar ventilation and her respiratory exchange ratio is 1 , her alveolar PO2 would be

(A) 12 mmHg
(B) 33 mmHg
(C) 48 mmHg
(D) 78 mmHg
(E) 96 mmHg

(ans) C

PAO2 = (Patm- 47)FO2-PACO2/R

As ventilation is doubled PACO2 is decreased by half
R =1
PACO2 =15

= (347-47)0.21-15
= 300 X 0.21 -15
= 63-15
= 48
