Hi all,

I got my score a few days ago. I got 237/96.
I have mostly been lurking on this forum and thought it was time I thanked all of you for the inspiration that I have received from reading the posts here.

I graduated a few years ago. I started studying in earnest for the exam around June of this year. I took the exam in November. I am a working mother of an eight month old son, so it was a juggling act.

The materials I used were:-
Goljan Notes and Audio Lectures
Kaplan Notes and lectures
Lippincott for Biochem and Pharmac
Katzung for Pharmacology
First Aid

I found Goljan lectures excellent and would wholeheartedly recommend them to everyone. I would never have found the lectures were it not for this forum, so THANK YOU ALL.

Kaplan notes are excellent and are more than enough to prepare for the exam. I found that the Goljan lectures in combination with the Kaplan notes serve to integrate many isolated facts into a bigger picture.

The exam day itself is a blur. I do remember making a lot of silly mistakes. The time was just enough to permit me one quick revision of the marked questions. On an average I marked 15-20 questions per block.

Once the exam finished, most of the questions I remembered, I got incorrect , so I was extremely apprehensive regarding my final score. According to my NBME performance(530 and 540), I was expecting around around 220/90-92. So I am immensely relieved.

I hope my experience is of some use to all of you.

Thank you,

Vtach.

Congratulations!!

I am going to take step 1 in April. Right now I have done the whole reading two times and would like to check where I am now. Could you give me some suggestions which test is more objective? By the way, I also would like to know the info about Goljan Notes and Audio Lectures which where I can buy them?

Thanks.

hi marwa , zhuyong, kerochi and dr shabs

I did take the Kaplan home study program. I found it invaluable. All the information you need is in the Kaplan notes. The goljan lectures just help link it all together.

I found the goljan lectures here

I would give then a five star rating....absolutely worth your time...

zhouyong, if you wish to evaluate how prepared you are the NBME tests are excellent albeit expensive. I had no idea if I was ready for the exam and the NBME score gave me the confidence to go ahead and stop postponing the exam.

Among the tests I took, this is my opinion:-
Kaplan q bank and q book = Good, requires intensive study. Covers most of the types of questions you will see on teh exam.
Usmleasy = Outdated questions , but easy interface. Good section in Neuroscience especially in localizing brain lesions. Very poor Behavioural science questions. Overall, not worth the money if one has already done the kaplan q bank.
Blackwell Online= 69% = Some of the questions are phrased awkwardly, but overall pretty decent.
NBME = The best indicator of performance on the exams. They are the closest to the real exam that you will find. The score report is exactly like the step 1 report and highlights areas of poor performance. Well worth the money.
Webpath Exams = Excellent. Great for revision.

all the best
Vtach
