hi,
no use as far as getting residency.
even in ur interview no help, rather they r going to ask why did u give plab, arent u clear u want to do plab or residency in usa... which is sought of negative but if u clear ur MRCP 1 and 2 then u will ahve advantage of reducing ur resiency in IM from 3 years to 2 in some programs.

dear malaysian and sonia...!
thank you both for your replys....
sonia : i don't think i'll be able to do MRCP , i thought that if i was GMC certified it will help in the inetrviews , but i think you're right , they will ask me why i sat for the plab test .
anyway .. i'm booked now for the plab2 as i said , i'll give it and hope for the best ...
thanx again malyasian and sonia...

any more opinions?

I know for sure that with MRCP, you'll have a little advantage and some programs would even let you join PGY2 or above. I also know a few people who skipped residency and have gone straight into fellowship after a full MRCP from the UK and ECFMG cert. In fact, their Steps scores are just in the 80s.

Is that allowed......to go straight into fellowship eventhough the basic clinical training wasn't done in the US???

no more opinions............?

I know lots of people (mostly from Europe) who did their residency in Europe and then came straight into a fellowship in the US. It is frowned upon here because they can't sit for the board exam in their speciality without having done a US residency (and board pass rates are important to evaluate programs here). But it does happen all the time.

Working in the UK is better than working in a devloping country, but it doesn't count for much. MRCP is almost unknown here unless the program director knows something about the British system. I can't count the number of people who say "MRCP??? Mangetic Resonnance cholangiopancreatography"

I don't think they will ask why you took the PLAB, although I have been told not to mention USMLE scores in the UK

Hi friends,

Having been working in Uk in medical rotation, i have many friends, who have got into residency even with low scores because they had MRCP, they told me that it did help them get into good programs, but they also mentioned to me that some programmes interviewers were asking what MRCP is !!!!!.they didnt know what it was!!!

And some considered it as advantage to start working in USA with work experience in UK, and most of my friends got into US residencey with H1 visas rather that J1 visa because of work experience.

And some of these people have gone into good fellowships because with good background in medicine theywere able to do well in exams in USA.

But looking into the ob situation in Uk now, it probably would be a better option to either work for Uk or for USA not both.

And u need to clear MRCP ( not part-1 or part-2) to enter into second year of residency.and most programmes have scrapped giving people with MRCP and waiver from residency.

Hope it helps.
