After taking the NBME, the chart at the end will tell you how you should do. NBME makes no claims on this. However, the lowest you can have is a 370 which is a 184. It has been said that a score of 500 or more - you are "Golden". Most of the medical students that I have talked to indicated that the score they get on NBNE and the actual scored received by the USMLE is only a point or two above or below. I think it is a good predictor. I took it in the self-paced mode and picked my answer and then looked up the answer to see if I was right or not. This helped me learn my strengths and weaknesses. You will get a print out telling you how you did in each subject - however, some subjects overlap and you cannot tell what happened. Some of the questions I found was very difficult and could not find the answer any where. However, it does give you a feel for the real thing because you WILL see stuff on the actual exam that is strange and new. It will keep you from getting frusterated when you actually take the exam and not freak out when you see stuff that seem to be un-answerable. Good luck. I do think this is a good indicator. I did not take it on my first attempt with Step One and did it the second time. I think it gave me more confidence after getting my score from NBME. If your score is low, then put the test off. You are NOT ready. Better to spend the $90 on the two tests consisting of 200 questions each or a total of 400 than to spend the $675 or MORE to take and fail the actual exam.
