I always thought 5 HT was a precursor to serotonin.(before it was decarboxylated)

OOPS!!! i rushed with an answer to a q that i thought too simple and look! DHT is responsable for developing of prostate, penis, scrotum TESTOSTERONE is responsable for developing of epididimys, ductus deferens, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory duct. mjl thanks for bringing this basic issue up! now if we came to this, can someone explain why in 17alphaHSD deficiency the parts developing under Testosterone influence are NORMAL? shouldnt they be underdeveloped because of lack of the enzyme that converts androstenedione to testosterone??

No I wasnt confused. But thats something else a q might seem too easy. And it could be easy to miss something that you "KNOW" Ill be the first to admit Im not good enough to "win" and miss something that I know.(Some can do that!) 5HT  serotionin, testosterone-5 alpha reductase dihydrotestosterone The 5 HT Im talking about is 5 Hydroxytryptophan, the immediate precursor to serotonin. What your talking about is an alternate name for serotonin

Alina in reference to your HI Yield q: In females this enzyme blocks synthesis of androgens; thus masculinization of the ext. genitalia does not occur and ambiguous genitalia is not seen Males because of this block are unable to produce androgen such as testosterone. Because adequate androgen is needed for male external genitalia, the ext. genitalia are only partialy masculinized or in severe case may have normal female genitalia {Endocrine Secrets by Michael T. McDermott. pg 195.} So only in the male might the genitals be underdeveloped Seriously,I think becoming a female is more passive since testosterone, DHT, and MIF are not required. Hope this helps.

hey mjl, i wasnt refferring to 17 hydroxylase, but to 17 alpha Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17 HSD) which converts androstenedione to testosterone. i was comparing the 2 gene defects: 5 alpha reductase and 17 alpha HSD. the clinical findings in these 2 are similar, meaning the external male genitalia are underdeveloped (low DHT), BUT the structures that develop under testosterone influence are normal too in both, although in the second gene defect testosterone is deficient also. i found it a little weird...
