Hi. I had step1 exam scheduled today. But I couldn't sleep well (only about 3 hours total) last night. I didn't feel well this morning, so had to cancel the test. How do you guys manage the nervous related sleep problem the night before test? Do you take any medicine to help sleep? Any advice will be deeply appreciated.

Hi, You better not take any medicine before exam ,because it may make you dizzy. I think you better listen to a very light music and try to relax and don't think about the exam at all.

its a fear of mine as well. It happened to me when I took my MCAT. Couldn't sleep so I took some melatonin at like 2-3 am and forced myself up at 5 am. Test didn't start till 9 am. I ended up falling asleep during the exam :| My advice, don't take any meds. But if you feel you have to, take it earlier (7-8 pm), try it out before you actually need it. ie, see how your body reacts to it the next day. I remember taking some anti-emitic (prevent motion sickness), I took lower the normal amount and it still knocked me out for like 3 days after I first took it. First and only time I ever took one. I'd prob try and stick with a schedule this time around. Try and get in bed by 9 or 10 pm. Relax the day before.

Thank you Laleh56's. It makes sense. But it's hard not to think about exam at all at the night before. If I don't sleep enough ( 6 or 7 hours), I feel dizzy the next morning as well.

Thank you lmbebo. You are right. I should try to go to bed early and relax the day before. How about Diphenhydramine? Will it affect next day's performance with half of the normal dose? Maybe I need to try it out.

i had one cup of nyquil every day before i went to bed for the last three nights b4 the test. The trick is not to exceed one cup (that they give you)... and to wake up early (I woke up 7 am the day b4, but i still needed the nyquil to fall asleep around 11pm...was fresh for the test...
