just curious, are all questions worth equal points??? I mean if someone gets a "hard" test and get 50% is that equal to getting 70% right on an "easy" test. I know nbme doesn't release percentages... but i think that all step one's are created equal... are they???

I think each exam set already has its internal scoring scheme.....so I suppose that on a hard set if someone scores 50 then it equals to lets say 80 on an easy set.I guess thats why they report the 2 digit figure for the standardization whereas the 3 digit score is the one specific for your performance for your exam you sat for which doesn't have as much significance as the 2 digit score.

the three digit has more significance in America... (first aid) and they pretty much correlate with each other... I've never heard of a 240/90 or 200/96... they are pretty much stuck together.. ie your two digit and three digit scores are introconvertable... 75 is always = to whatever the passing score is at the moment; whenever they change the passing three digit, then the correlation will change albeit slightly...

all tests have an equal mix of easy and difficult questions..and the scores mean more to IMG's than american/canadian grads..

i called up nbme and asked them, apparently, all questions within a test are equal points, but some tests are easier than others... ie, i person can get only 60% right in one hard test and still pass, but another person might need to get 70% of the questions to pass on an easy test. Since these are two extremes i would think most of our tests are within the 62-67% range....
