Dear bbb/retroviridae/anyone,
The residency co-ordinator of a program I had interviewed with wrote to me saying that they wd rank me high. This program has a good reputation and since I have recd very few interview invites, I was counting heavily on this one. However, I now find that they have conveyed the same msg to almost all of my friends who interviewed there.
I have the following questions-
1)Do u think its a good idea to call them up and ask how do they plan to rank so many people? I think I will loose whatever chances I have for my audacity!
2)Or shd I just enquire abt my place in their list? Or shd I just wait n watch?
3)Is it okay for a program to promise to rank so many of their candidates?
Please advise!

I don't think they would say they would rank you highly if they were not interested in you. That having been said, they are free to state they will consider everyone strongly. As are you to say the same thing. If you really want to go there, you can always call and ask the PD what are your realistic chances. I think most PDs would be straightforward with you. You are free to express your interest in a program (and it may boost you a couple spots on their list, but again, it may not). I would encourage you to let them know if you are really considering them strongly. BBB is the expert here though.

a friend of mine was promised she would be ranked very high by 2 programs and ended up not matching anywhere and losing one year in the process..

Programs cannot divulge rank list position.
Do not put too much weight on this promise. Lots of programs send those out to everyone so that candidates will feel good and rank them high.

Hmmmmm, I have never just sent out and email to candidates just saying that we were going to rank them. Looks like it wasn't here where you interviewed......!
