What are spare receptors?

  #2

Under normal conitions, receptors are not saturated: that is extra receptors exist. Normally the # of receptors is not rate limiting for drug or hormone action action. Plasma conc. of free drug or hormone is usually indicative of activity.

Thanks for your reply mjl1717.

In FA 2004 (pharmac section page 290 ) there is a graph in pharmacodynamics for the spare receptors. Can u please tell me what is EC50 and Kd.

thnanks .

I have the 2003 Kaplan:

1)I think EC50 is the effective dose or conc. in 50% of a population
2)Kd, I believe is a disassociation constant-is the free drug conc. at which 50% of the corresponding binding site on the protein is saturated.

Addendum:some math

{drug protein complex}/{unbound drug}times{protein}=k1/k2=Kd

hope this helps
