How long can a J1 visa be extended for? Is it possible for further extension to complete your education, say 5 years + 3 years?

J-1 visas are available for 7 years. H1-b visas are available for 6 years.

hi i'm enrique from monterrey mexico,i heard that some people first become a certified nurse to get the residency visa in usa,then they work as a nurse until they pass their usmle exams,this is valid or how does it works?
