I'm an IMG currently in a PhD program in University of Cincinnati (Biomedical Engineering). Got a score of 248/99 on step 1 and am prepping for step 2. I graduated medicine in 2000 in India and practised there for 2 years before joining grad school in the US. Realistically, i will finish PhD in 2006 and apply for 2007 residency. Would my break from clinical medicine be a disadvantage when I apply for residency? Assuming I get a decent score in step 2 and 3, will I have a chance to get into surgery/dermatology?

hey kalyan
i dunno if u know me - i'm som - and i got a masters in pathology from UC also. Currently about to start residency.

if u have good scores and a PhD - u can get into the top notch university hosps - for IM

u wont stand a chance for surg - and forget about dermat
thats cos the only surgical programs accepting IMGs are avg. community hosps - and what they look for is surgical experience - they are really not interested in research - and the break would be your hindrance - on the other hand it works for your favour if u want IM - as top notch schools like research work with good scores

dermat? uh..uh

docsom,

I know who you are, and I was wondering why your name was off the grad students list. Well, congratulations!! Where have you matched? If you do not mind my asking, what were ur scores?

Hello,
I am a I.M.G with a Masters in public health from U.C.L.A ? What are my chances in to getting IM residency?

I would agree that surg and derm would be tough, but hey, give it a shot. I know people who still get in (although wth connections). So try UC. Docsom is right about IM. Good university programs would love you (if you get an equally good step II score). Community hospitals don't care so much for the research, although some do. Every FMG I know who gets derm has done at least an internship in IM or pedi. Heck, I know US grads who have done years of research still unable to get derm.

prajesh, MPH is also useful, but you still need good USMLE scores.

I have a PHd with 8 publications....graduated 2000....have 99/99/certified/need visa.....applied to a wide variety of schools including the top ones to the community schools......applied to 40 schools and got only 8 .......3 univ and rest are community schools.....believe me this year was extremely competitive......schools that would have accepted me 3 yrs back have rejected my application.....there are a lot of people wiht great scores and some kind of research and USCE here.......so there is no guarantee about the application......so do your best and apply early......and Pray....goodluck......

Hey I agree! I think this year or maybe every year is getting more and more competitive. My classmates from years past (those who went straight into residency versus doing research like me) did pretty well in the match if they had good scores (we used to say 85+). Now I hear of more and more people with 95+ not getting any or very few interviews. I think the either the avg step scores for IMGs has gone up recently, or there are many more applicants than before (which you would doubt with the tougher visa rules for the US these days). You need to do something to stand out from the crowd. It used to be research was a good way, but now I don't know. Esp since so many programs want you to have graduated from med school in the last 2-3 years. I asked some PDs why they did that, and the answer was they just needed someway to reduce the number of applications they get.
