This is something I have been thinking about a long time. What do you people think about starting a list of all the programs that have given interviews to IMGs in each specialty? No one really posts that kind of info, because I think we are all scared of the competition. But I wasted a lot of money applying to programs that really don't give interviews to IMGs. I think program directors might hate this, because it will mean more applicants ... but I think it is a good idea. We could further refine it with a places IMGs have gotten residencies after the Match. I also accepted a prematch, so there is no risk to me. I also think most program application deadlines have now passed, so this wouldn't be for us but for next years applicants. What do you think? Good idea or bad one?

great idea..and i agree about the fear of competition..i'm not sure though if people are willing to participate..

If it would help save some of the applicants money, then why not share the information. I don't think that it could raise my applicants any - I'm already more than 250 applications higher than last year.

Are they books sponsored by a drug company? Then they were free.

Why not see a doctors handwriting? I wish my residents could write in English - instead of whatever they are writing in. I wish that I knew what they wrote on Mars - I bet it looks similar......

Hi all
I am also a FMG, preparing for 2006 Match. If you write the names of hospitals which gave interviews to you, you 'll help me and the rest of FMG a lot.
Thanks

You got 99 on step 1 and didn't make CSA? That's scares me little!!!! :?
Is that a tough test really?

step 2CS, previously CSA, is mainly a test of your interpersonal/communication skills..someone with difficulty communicating in English may have some trouble with the exam.. don't let it scare you..a great score on steps 1 & 2 doesn't mean you'll pass the CS, and a not so great score on the steps doesn't mean you'll fail CS..

Hey friends............Keep on posting places where you got interviews......It will help us(going for the 2006 match) a lot.

No, but you need proper preparation. I had English classes at high school, but only grammar, we were llike 40 people in the class and there was no way of practicing enough conversation or listening comprehension. Then, in 1999 I started using a Spanish magazine (Speak Up) to improve my listening comprehension, the Barron book for the TOEFL, and Harper's magazine. I aced the TOEFL (293 points out of possible 300) . I prepared myself. But I never got much formal training in speaking. A friend of my family who lives in NJ always has trouble understanding what I say, and I have to repeat myself.

Otherwise I find the CS terrifying because everything you do is subject to scrutiny.

wow...good number of interviews.. On what criteria did u rank these programs..in other words what all the points u noted in a program to accept it...

  #13

cam: My CV: 5 months USCE with US LoR; 3 years as a research fellow with many publications/presentations, no visa needed, so I think I have done everything an FMG could do to improve their CV. My downside was that I only got my step II scores in the end of Nov. So of my good interviews, I only got Washington U after my step II scores came out. Pretty much everything else was with just my step I scores. I wonder if I would do better next year since all my scores would be in when I first applied.

usmleasr: I ranked programs based on desire (med over peds) and then by reputation/my gut feel of the program when I went there. For example, I really liked the IM program at the Methodist in Dallas. It seemed great for a community program, but they only take 1-2 FMGs a year, and everyone in my interview day was an FMG (I think they didn't want the US students to see us). Additionally, Cleveland Clinic, I liked the name before I went there. But after going there, I felt it was weak. I think for FMGs it is still very good, but their US students were from weak schools. Among the university programs, I went by feel and reputation as well as being in a city I wouldn't mind living in/could afford to live in. So U Hawai'i has a not so academic reputation, but would be a great if expensive place to live. I want to do fellowship, so I thought I should go to the best program I could get into. Don't know if that helps. I think ranking programs is more of a personal thing based on what you want out of your residency. If I didn't want a fellowship, I would probably have ranked the Methodist in Dallas and U Hawai'i very highly.

Thank you Retoviridea.
Did you do an Externship or Observership?
Good luck

I did elective clerkships (the US will still consider you a student when doing your housemanship, because (at least in India) you don't receive your diploma until you finish your housemanship, and no diploma=student).

thanks for ur wonderful explanation retoviridae.. i am in similar situation like most other imgs.....that waiting for CS results...I am not sure if we get it for this match...so I am confused in asking prematch...I have a very good community program, but friends say I should wait and go for university program...so I was wondering if I should ask prematch or wait...just left to god and to wait till this month end for CS results...let us see...

With these credentials I had expected decent # of interviews but I got only 9, only 5 university.. mabbe my H1 b visa requirement has something to do with this or my late application(late september).

wish u good luck....

bye

About Iowa University Hospital and Clinics.. I.dont know much about the program I have my interview at the end of the month...i will tell you then!!
