i am just asking when would his immune system be capable of reacting to an infection... I mean we dont immunize children till they are two months old cuz they wouldn't give much of a response.... so if you had a neonate that had an infection what would his blood cp look like???

the neutrophil and lymphocyte ratio does not show any difference
What you can do is take alook at peripheral blood smear look for increase, toxic granule ,vacuoles

its very important to understand some basic concepts on immunity in neonates

1) neonatal T cells can respond to antigens, generating a mixed leucocyte response. the neutrophilic function is not that well developed.

(that is why BCG is given at birth, coz it invokes cell mediated immunity which can be adequately generated at birth)

2) they have IgG antibodies obtained from the mother. IgM synth begins soon after birth, rises quickly on day 7, but adult levels are reached finally by 1 year of age.

(maybe that's why they're more susceptible to Gram Negative infections in the first few weeks of life)

3)there is a predominance of lymphocytes by 1 year of age.
adult-like pattern of DLC is finally attained by 6 years of age.

TLC isn't reliable in diagnosis of neonatal sepsis - Absolute neutrophil counts and ratio of immature to total neutrophils is more important.

As "luckiest" said - change in neutrophil morphology can be used - toxic granules, Dohle Bodies, Vacoulations in neutrophild etc. - but studies have shown that they have poor positive predictive value - at best 33- 50% only.

hence a combination of these factors is used for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis - its called the Sepsis Screen. (won't go into its details for now)

if you're still not satisfied, lymphocytosis is seen in neonates in the following conditions:
congenital syphilis
sepsis
ABO incompatibility
Maternal Hypertension

Very good,
But i can't think of any relation between maternal HTN and neonatal lymphocytosis.

lymphocytosis in association with maternal hypertension is just that - an ASSOCIATION, or rather an observation. no one exactly knows why...
