This topic is for posting hospitals/programs that accept externships.
Unlike an observership the externship is considered a hands on clinical experience where you get to interview and examine patients. You will probably work in a team and have an opportunity to interact with medical students, interns, residents and attendings. If you are lucky to get a letter of recommendation (LOR) from your attending than you hit the big pot - US clinical experience (USCE). This LOR can be uploaded on your ERAS applications.
Where to get an externship? I made hundreds of phone calls to find one for family medicine which I needed for the California Letter. I found only 2 hospitals in California willing to accept applications from IMGs:

If you have $$ and visas to the US, the best program you can do is the Harvard Medical school program (google it to find the website). The harvard program is only for those who did not graduate yet. It is very costly, but is worth it. They only give you three slots to select which elective you want to do, I wrote down ten electives in order of preference and got my sixth one.

What are the requirements for an externship? Does it matter what step is passed? Also can you still get on if you don't have ECFMG certification?

requ will b diff according to diff hospitals..not sure about wat steps but u can always call em or email em to ask..same goes for ecfmg cert...

i am an IMG from india. i graduated 2 years back.i'm opting for 2008 match. in view of the recent flood of applications for the 2007 match should i start looking for externships. if yes can anyone help me in regarding my search for hospitals offering externships.

Hi there !
I am a medical student and I am suppose to attend a clinical clerkship, an elective next summer in Chicago, Illinois. The only problem is that I am not able to find some information about the posibility of contracting a personal liability insurance = malpractice insurance, insurance that is mandatory and for visiting students it is not offered by the host university, nor by the home one!!!
Can anyone of you help me in this matter, recommending me an insurance company that deals with this sort of inssurance or the procedure that I have to follow.What companies or brokers should I contact in order to buy an insurance like that ?

its something that I went thru a couple of months ago....Minsurance cost around 1300 to 1500 US dollars more than all other expences that u incur during ur visit.............but still if u want to go ahead I can search that in my mail pool someday.
Personally, I decided to put off my tour for this soul reason.......

hi, I am an Ophthamologist from India, Graduated in1995. Since then I was practicing as an Ophthalmologist. I moved to US in June 2005. Since then I was busy for usmle for one year and this year I am doing research fellowship in an Ophthalmology department. I could not match for internship year.
My Credentials are 93/91/82 . I am on dependent visa. Waiting for EAD.
Please give a valuable advice for how to match for internship position.
