Hi Friends,
I am an IMG from India. I was regularly visiting this forum from the day that I have decided to take USMLE. I have scored 254/99 on step 1 and 258/99 on step2. I have graduated in medicine in 1997.I have finished post graduation in general surgery in India. My graduation year is 2001. I did not have any gap in my education. Most of the programs that I have applied liked every thing in me, but they don't want to offer an iterview just because my graduation year fall » 5 years. should they consider 1997 or 2001 as my graduation date? What I thought would be my strong point( PG Degree in GS) turned out to be my weakness. The saddest part of the whole process is the applications are screened just mechanically by some staff in the lower order. They just want to fill in the check list. If you can fill in the check list you are in otherwise you are out .
I welcome comments from the active members on this forum.

you are right and yes it is unfair. I would think having done PG in India or anywhere would be considered a plus. Maybe you should try to be faculty. One of my school's anaesthesia ma'm's came to the US this year and got a prematch in anaesthesia. I can vouch that she is excellent. Not all prorgams look at graduation date though. Maybe you are aiming too high (even though with your scores you deserve it).

unfortunately, many programs put more weight on the year of graduation (1997 in your case) than USMLE scores. Yes, you have obviously great scores, but there are many other factors to consider.. find a program that will interview you, that's the bottom line.

Hi guys,
Thankyou very much for sharing your opinion with me. I am not aiming for the so called high rated programs. I just want to break in to this system. I have got some interviews. I personally feel that finally it will be your personal motivation that makes you stand above others.

Hello:

First of all congratulations for the number of intervews you got, and hope you can get into the program that you wish.

I have a question? where did you friend get the prematch in anesthesiology? I did anesthesia residency and a fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesia in Mexico and only receive rejection letters from the different programs I applied. I will appreciate the information. I also think that what i thought will be a great asset result to be in my weakest point.

Thanks.

Well, remember she was faculty at my medical school in anaesthesia and also was an ICU attending. I am not sure where she prematched. I heard in Cleveland. What's there ... Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Metrohealth. I don't think there are any other anaesthesia programs there.

Absofrikkinlutely correct. Knock them dead. Almost makes up for this portion of my job description:

The saddest part of the whole process is the applications are screened just mechanically by some staff in the lower order.

:P

i would have to disagree about mechanical screening by staff in the lower order. the PC's with whom i've interacted seem to be very educated and knowledgeable people. most have also been helpful and i've built a nice friendly relationship with one of them. many of you may not know that your interaction with them may make or break you.
