I don't understand the purpose of these combined programs..What is the difference between being "Internal Medicine-Emergency Medicine" certified and only internal medicine specialist? Is such a combined program much better than a single one? I mean, is there any advantage after completing a mixed program? Also, I would like to know more informations about transitional year...Will a transitional year open more "doors", or what are its benefits? I would be grateful for any kind of informations!

After completing some combined programs one is eligible to take both boards, from what I've seen on their web-sites. So, that means that one would be able to be certified in two specilaties (provided one takes and passes both boards). In my opinion this is a big time advantage. Good luck to you. A.
