Hi,

I recently interviewed at Howard University Hospital in DC for a categorical position. I personally really liked the program, even though there are some warnings on www.scutwork.com about lots of scutwork and bad ancillary staff. The residents there seemed happy and claimed that scutwork is now less of a problem than before.

The only thing that gives me pause is that I don't have a clear idea about how good this program is. I have some acquaintances who make some denigrating remarks about this program, and I don't know whether to just put this down to latent racism as this is a historically black university. Also, I didn't see any resident other than minorities and IMG's. I also found an article on the net in a magazine devoted to black issues that claimed that historically black universities' hospitals and residency programs have been facing lots of financial and quality problems recently. They specifically mentioned Howard, but the article was over two years old.

So I thought I'd post here and see if anyone know what the reputation of this program is amongst AMG's. Being an IMG, I have interviews mostly with community programs and others affiliated with universities. This is one of only two I got that are from pure university programs.

Many thanks in advance for any feedback anyone can provide on this program.

I have never been there or met a graduate of their residency program, but among AMGs, Howard is considered pretty bad. Their school was deaccredited several years ago (I can't remember why, and it was quickly reinstated). I am not sure if going to Howard because it is a university based program would help you for fellowships. The best way to judge that would be to see where their residents get fellowships. If they have fellowships there at Howard, you would have an advantage getting those if you did your residency there. But again, I don't think their fellowships would be well respected either.
