:?: Hello,
I just came to USA to take my CSA on 1st July, which I cleared and now am ECFMG certified. Before going back to Pakistan, I want to apply for step 3. so as to take a date. I am confused about the exact reason why we take step 3.Is it for getting an H1 visa? Is it mandatory before residency starts? Also, as right now I am residing in Maryland, do I need to take the step 3 from this state or some other state? And If if take it here, and clear then does it become eligible for all states?
I would be grateful if someone could clarify my queries.
With Regards.,

Hi Malik.Step 3 should be taken during the first year of your residency. You don't need to take it now.But if you would like to get h1b visa then you should take that test. That is the only reason. And i think that only a few states allow you to take that test before starting your residency.
You can take it than in one of those states and it will be valid in all states.
Good luck

Someone wrote that you can take the USMLE in a state that will let you take it before your residency and it will be valid in all other states...this is not true. Some states will accept it but there are a few that will not accept the USMLE 3 pass result if you did not take it when you applied for licensing in that state - pretty stupid rule don't you think? But you may want to check it out if there is one particular state you want to go to.

How could I find out whether Indiana accept the Step3 score which is taken in NY? I would like to take step3 before the residency. NY allow you do that, whereas Indiana asks two year postgraduate training.
