trust me, I am going through this nonsense now. The earlier you are ECFMG certified the better. I would say ideally you should take your step I in early 2005, and finish your step II and Step II CS in Summer of 2006. That way when you send in your application in September, you will be ECFMG certified. In truth, if you do well on step I, you can get interviews without step II. So I took my step 1 in end of June 2004 and my step II in the end of Oct 2004. I got some good interviews. But for most programs, they will not interview you without step I and step II, and for the most part, they want you to be ECFMG certified to get the interview. Remember, the earlier you apply and have all exams done, the better off you are!
