Not only the major basic protein, but the four unique compounds found there. Of the four substances present in the specific granules of the eosinophil, three are related with the toxic effect on helmints and protozoans: the major basic protein (MBP), the eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) and the eosinophil peroxidase (EPO). The fourth one, the eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), creates a dysfunction on the nervous system of parasites (therefore, it helps agains helmints but not agains protozoans).
