I'm a resident of Alabama and will be starting medical school at St. Matthews in 05. I know I want to do a residency in Emergency Medicine but I'm concerned about how hard it is to get into that program. I know there is one here in Birmingham but have no idea if being a citizen of that state would help me or not. I've looked all over to see some ranking list of what residencies are hard to get into and which ones are not but have been unable to find such a list. Can anyone give me any words of wisdom? I'm also 33, married, and have 3 children so I'm taking a big risk for this goal. If there's some 90% or so chance that I'll be stuck in family practice, IM or Pshyciatry then I may re evalulate even going. Any help would be appreciated.

according to First Aid for Step 2, emergency med is pretty competitive.. just do well in your USMLE along with a good performance in med school, and it shouldn't be a problem..good luck with you..and congratulations..
