What is the difference between FORCED EXPIRATORY VOLUME and VITAL CAPACITY?

They both measure the maximun volume that can be exhaled after a maximum inspiration. To my understanding, the difference is that, to measure FEV, the patient is asked to do it AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. Am I right?

drtsepbystep, what u'll have after this will be FORCED VITAL CAPACITY .
FEV 1 is the volume expired in the first secondafter a max inspiration AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE to quote u. so FEV1 is the first part of FVC.

so between VC and FVC there's only a matter of force of expiration (volume is the same)
and between FEV and FVC is a matter of volume difference, a ratio better said, to see how much of that FVC u can expire in the first second. this is important for dx of obstructive dis, in which obsruction allows less air to be expired in the first second.

i hope this clears it a little.

You force 10 sodiers to pass through a tunnel .Each men represents each cubic of air.Thre tunnel is airway connnect from external to lung.

If ten sodier just wandering, no time committent most of men can walk thorugh tunnel finally. (FVC)
But if they running from bomb :!: ,in rush ,in limit time say 1 seconds
there will be only few men can escape to the other side.
The survival men through the other side will be extremley decrease sad causes there's a narrow tunnel (dead trap) that very few men can pass in limit time.
There goes th emeaning of FEV1/FVC

Feel free to correct or spice up the story
